York County Hosting Camps at Queens Lake Middle School, Tabb Middle School
Children who have just completed kindergarten through fourth grade are invited to participate at a day camp from June 24 to July 25 at Queens Lake Middle School. Students who just completed grades five through seven are invited to a camp at Tabb Middle School on the same days.
The registration fee for Historic Triangle residents is $200.
Campers at Queens Lake will participate in Olympic games, pajama day, sports day, circus day and more. The Griffin mascot from the College of William and Mary will make a special visit, as will the Virginia Living Museum.
Campers at Tabb will take field trips to Go-Karts Plus and the movie theater, as well as get to roller skate, swim and bowl. They’ll also get to participate in crafts, sports, karaoke and more.

Senior Center of York Hosting July Events
Don’t miss out on the following events at the Senior Center of York:
- Scrapbooking and greeting cards workshop: Cathy Fowler from Creative Memories will lead a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on July 8 that will teach you how to make cards and how to scrapbook. To register, call 898-3807.
- Post July 4th celebration: Mike Steen, the education director of the Watermen’s Museum will talk about the 1813 naval battle on the York River at a 1 p.m. event July 9. You can also join in singing a medley of patriotic songs. Refreshments will be served. Sign up at the front desk by July 8.
- Haircuts for men: Alex Falcone, a barber from All About Hair will be on site from 9 a.m. to noon July 12 to give you a new look. Call 898-3807 to make an appointment.
- York-Poquoson Triad Ice Cream Social: Vickie Gaffney, the community outreach officer from the Newport News Sheriff’s office, will give a presentation at 1 p.m. July 17 as part of the social. To celebrate Mardi Gras, you’re encouraged to show up in a costume, with prizes available for good costumes. Ben & Jerry’s will provide ice cream. To register, call 898-3807 by July 15.
- Radio-controlled helicopter demonstration: Model helicopter enthusiast Larry Rash will give a brief demonstration on radio controlled helicopters. Space is limited. You can register by calling 898-3807 or by signing up at the front desk.
- Driver safety class: Registration is underway for an AARP Driver Safety Program that will serve drivers age 50 or over. The two-day class will run from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. on July 22 and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on July 23. The class does not feature any behind-the-wheel driving, and drivers age 55 or over who attend must attend both days of the program to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies offer reductions to drivers age 50 or over with the same attendance requirements. The cost of the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Class registration can be done in person at the Senior Center or over the phone at 898-3807. Class enrollment is limited to 25 people.
- Learn about technology: JoAnn Ervin, the regional coordinator for the Virginia Assistive Technology System, will demonstrate how to use various consumer electronics that can help you out with household tasks and daily living activities. Call the senior center at 898-3807 by July 23 to register.
