NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University’s Jahn Hines was named first team All-State on Monday by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Hines, from Norfolk, Va., completed a remarkable career as a Captain in March by being named named first team All-American by D3hoops.com, as well as second team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The statewide honor is the fourth straight for Hines, and his third straight first team award.
Hines became the first CNU men’s basketball player to receive five All-American awards, and concluded his career as CNU’s second-leading scorer in history. Hines was named third team All-America by the NABC in 2022, and received fourth team All-America honors from D3hoops.com in 2023 as well as in 2024. He was named first team All-Region this season by D3hoops.com, and was also tabbed first team All-District by the NABC this year.
Hines is one of just 15 men’s basketball student-athletes to receive All-American status in the 57-year history of the men’s basketball program. Last year, he joined Lamont Strothers as the only three-time All-Americans. His list of career accomplishments includes being named the Player of the Year in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the third time this season, and Hines became just the seventh Christopher Newport men’s basketball player to ever have his jersey number retired (#22).
A product of Norview High School, Hines is the first CNU player to finish his career in the Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, and assists. He played in 123 games, starting 119 times, and averaged 17.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He led the Captains to an overall record of 104-19 (.846) during his career, which included the program’s first National Championship in 2023. He averaged 19.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest this year as the Captains concluded the season with a 23-6 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Hines scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds in the Division III All-Star Game in Fort Wayne, Indiana, prior to the National Championship in March. He made five-of-11 shots and played 20 minutes in the All Star contest.
Roanoke’s Clay Nunley was named VASID Coach of the Year, while Roanoke’s Joshua McClary earned Defensive Player of the Year. Hampden-Sydney College’s Adam Brazil won Player of the Year honors, and Washington and Lee’s Connor Ambrosi rounded out the major awards with Rookie of the Year honors.
