Hannah Orloff, Gabbi San Diego, and Camille Malagar Earn VaSID Women’s Basketball All-State Honors

WINCHESTER — For just the second time in program history, the Christopher Newport women’s basketball team boasted three All-State selections as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2024-25 honorees on Monday. Senior Hannah Orloff earned first team All-State honors while fifth-year seniors Camille Malagar and Gabbi San Diego were each honored as second team selections.

All three players earned All-State certificates for the first time after standout swan song seasons. The trio join Sondra Fan, Anaya Simmons, and Natalie Terwilliger in 2022 as the only groups of three to earn the recognition in the same season.

Orloff extended a streak to four consecutive seasons that a CNU forward earned first team All-State honors. Simmons went back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 before Hannah Kaloi earned the recognition last season. CNU has logged at least one All-State pick in all but one season dating back to 2003-04.

Leading the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport women’s basketball team from start to finish in 2024-25, Orloff made history as the first CNU player to capture five conference Player of the Week certificates in a single season, tying the conference record. She was also only the third player in conference lore to win three Player of the Week selections in consecutive weeks.

The formidable front-court force played in 27 games with 18 starts and averaged 8.3 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game. She added 61 blocked shots for an average of 2.3 per game and had 32 steals as a dominant defensive player in 2024-25. Equally as effective offensively, Orloff knocked down 59.3 percent (83-140) of her shots from the field; while shy of the qualifying standard to be included in the NCAA national statistics, that field-goal percentage would have ranked seventh in all of Division III this season.

Earning her first All-State certificate in her final season, Orloff piled up 148 career rejections and moved up to fourth on the all-time list at Christopher Newport. The 61 blocks this season are ranked ninth most for a single season. With that performance, she ranked in the top-20 nationally in total blocks. She earned first team All-Region honors from D3hoops.com and was named the C2C Player and Defensive Player of the Year.

Also earning All-State honors for the first time were the fifth-year guard tandem of Camille Malagar and Gabbi San Diego. Both also collected second team All-Region honors from D3hoops.com after helping lead Christopher Newport through another banner season with a 26-2 overall record.

Malagar was the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament MVP after leading CNU to another league title. She finished the season with 10.5 points per game to lead the way for the Captains while shooting 44.4 percent (108-243) from the field. She also led the Captains in three-pointers made with 29 and went 27-for-28 from the free-throw line (.964). Her efficient shooting and scoring prowess helped her earn the Conference Player of the Week selection twice this season. She scored in double figures in her final seven games of the season and had 10 or more in 15 total games.

San Diego continued to prove herself as one of the most reliable point guards in the country by ranking second nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.87) in her final campaign. She recorded a season-high nine assists in two different games, including against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins in a neutral site game. Like Malagar, the Lorton, Va. native was also impressive from the free-throw line, knocking down 29 consecutive free throws while missing just twice from the stripe during the year for a 94.1 percent performance (32-34). San Diego started 15 games while appearing in 22 after working around a mid-season injury. She averaged 5.5 points and 3.0 assists per game and led the Captains in total assists for the fourth straight season.

The three VaSID All-State picks helped lift the nationally-ranked Captains to a sixth consecutive conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Christopher Newport closed out the season with a 26-2 overall record.
