W&M Field Hockey Announces 2024 Schedule

(Tribe Athletics)

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary head field hockey coach Tess Ellis released a challenging 2024 schedule for the defending CAA Champions on Monday. The Tribe’s 19-match slate includes five contests against teams that finished last year in the national top 20 and six NCAA Tournament teams, including two semifinalists.

All six NCAA Tournament teams and ranked foes will be part of the Tribe’s 13-match nonconference schedule. Of the 13 nonconference foes, 10 finished last season with a record of .500 or better, including eight that won 12 or more matches in 2023.

W&M opens the season with a pair of scrimmages against top-10 opponents on the road. The Tribe heads to No. 7 Liberty on Aug. 21, before traveling to No. 4 Maryland on Aug. 25.

The Green and Gold starts off the regular season at No. 3 Duke on Friday, Aug. 30. W&M won the last meeting in Durham, 2-1, in 2022. The Blue Devils advanced to the national semifinals a season ago.

The Tribe begins its nine-match home slate on Sunday, Sept. 1, against in-state rival Richmond at 1 p.m. The Spiders’ coaching staff includes three Tribe graduates in assistants Chaney (Manganello) Eldridge, Erin Menges and Christie van de Kamp. UR is led by former Tribe assistant coach Martu Loncarica.

The contest with Richmond will be the first of three-straight home matches as W&M hosts a pair of nationally-ranked opponents the following weekend. No. 9 Harvard travels to Williamsburg on Friday, Sept. 6, with No. 17 Old Dominion making the trip up I-64 on Sunday, Sept. 8. The Crimson won the Ivy League title last season and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, while ODU won the Big East title.

W&M starts a three-match road swing at No. 7 Liberty on Friday, Sept. 13, before heading to James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 15. The Tribe and Flames meet for the fourth-straight year, while the Green and Gold have met the Duke every season since 1973.

The Tribe wraps up the road trip at reigning Patriot League Champion American on Friday, Sept. 20. W&M closes out the weekend by hosting Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 22. It marks the Wildcats first trip to Williamsburg since 2004.

The Green and Gold’s final two home nonconference matches will come against in-state foes VCU (Oct. 13) and Longwood (Oct. 27). W&M will also have road non-league contests at No. 5 Virginia (Sept. 29), Fairfield (Oct. 20), and LaSalle (Nov. 3). The Cavaliers advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season, while both VCU and LaSalle advanced to the A-10 Tournament and posted 13-win seasons. Fairfield won the NEC regular season title and finished the year with a 14-4 mark.

In CAA play, the Tribe will host Towson (Sept. 27), Delaware (Oct. 11) and Drexel (Oct. 25). The Green and Gold’s road CAA matches come at Northeastern (Oct. 4), Hofstra (Oct. 18) and Monmouth (Nov. 1). W&M is 40-24 in 11 seasons under head coach Tess Ellis in CAA play.

Monmouth, which won the CAA regular season in 2023, will host the CAA Championship, Nov. 8-10, in West Long Beach, N.J. The Tribe won its second league championship a season ago, defeating the Hawks, 3-2, in double overtime at Delaware. W&M has qualified for the CAA Tournament in seven of the last eight years.
