W&M Lax Falls at Hofstra, 13-6, in CAA Opener

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The William & Mary lacrosse team opened its CAA slate with a 13-6 setback at Hofstra on Friday evening.

Although W&M (4-6, 0-1) trailed by just two at halftime, 6-4, Hofstra (5-4, 2-0) outscored the Tribe 7-0 in the third quarter to build a comfortable advantage.

The Tribe held HU scoreless in the fourth quarter but was unable to get closer than the final margin.

Tribe Standouts
Paige Gilbert and Kate Draddy led W&M with two goals apiece, while Gilbert added two draw controls and two ground balls.

Ainsley Huizenga also recorded two points (1g, 1a) to go with a pair of draw controls.

Marin Wilhelm was outstanding in goal and recorded a career-high 15 saves with a .536 save percentage. Nine of her stops came in the first half.

Inside the Numbers
Hofstra outshot W&M, 40-24, which included a 28-13 margin on goal.

The Pride also owned advantages in draw controls (15-8) and ground balls (19-9), while it committed seven fewer turnovers (9-16).

The Opposition
Kerry Walser led HU with six points (5g, 1a) and six draw controls, while Taylor Mennella (2g, 2a) and Melissa Sconone (2g, 2a) tallied four points apiece.

Trinity Reed registered a game-high eight draw controls, while goalie Luchianna Cardello posted seven saves and a .538 save percentage.

W&M will return to action when it plays at Monmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m.
