NEWPORT NEWS — The Virginia Peninsula Community College women’s volleyball team wrapped up the regular-season portion of its schedule with a straight-sets victory over Cheney University on Wednesday night at Heritage High School.
The scores were 25-13, 25-16, 25-19. It was the second time in two weeks the Gators (2-3) swept the Wolves.
In the most recent win, the Gators never trailed at any point in the match. In the first set, the Gators took leads of 5-0, 14-4 and 20-7 en route to the win. In Game 2, the Gators led 2-0 and 14-4 to take control. In the final set, the Gators took a 3-0 lead, but the Wolves tied the set five times, the last at 11 before the Gators closed the match with a 14-8 run.
On Saturday, Nov. 4, the Gators will play host to the New South Athletic Conference Invitational. VPCC will face Appalachian Bible College at 10 a.m., followed by Mid-Atlantic Christian University playing the University of Virginia-Lynchburg. The consolation match will follow the second semifinal, with the championship match capping off the day’s events.
