Volleyball Roundup: Jamestown Wins Bay Rivers District

With its 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 road win against York on Thursday, Jamestown clinched its fifth consecutive Bay Rivers District title.

After dropping just two district matches all year, the Eagles finished their regular season in style by routing the Falcons in straight sets, the closest of which was decided by 12 points.

Jamestown got a well-rounded performance from a number of players including Ellie Popelka with 14 kills and six digs, Emma Schriner with 13 kills and four blocks and Maria Esch with 17 digs, four aces and four kills.

The Eagles (19-3) will be the top seed in Monday’s Conference 18 tournament, while York (2-14) will hit the road for its first game in the 27 tournament that also begins Monday.

Lafayette Outlasts New Kent in Five

Lafayette’s regular season ended on a high note as the Rams managed to outlast New Kent at home 25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9.

The Rams and Trojans traded sets back and forth throughout the entire match, with Lafayette ultimately winning the decisive fifth set by six points.

Abby Oren paced Lafayette with a double-double of 31 kills and 13 digs, while Julia Howard added 45 assists to go with six digs and four kills.

Lafayette (11-9) will prepare for its first match in the Conference 18 tournament that begins Monday.

Warhill Eases Past Bruton

Warhill concluded its regular season with a comfortable straight-set win against Bruton 25-9, 25-20, 25-23 at home Thursday evening.

After cruising to a 16-point win in the first set, Warhill got more of a challenge from the Panthers as more reserve players saw the court.

Despite Bruton putting up more of a fight over the last two sets, Warhill was able to come out with five- and two-point victories, respectively.

Warhill (13-5) will now await its opponent in the Conference 25 tournament that begins Monday, while Bruton (5-15) will prepare to travel to play Washington & Lee in the Conference 33 tournament on Monday.

Poquoson Tops Tabb in Four Sets

Tabb fell at home 24-26, 25-16, 25-14, 25-20 during its regular season finale against Poquoson on Thursday.

The Tigers managed to edge Poquoson in the first set by two points, but were unable to sustain that level of play throughout the final three sets that were won comfortably by Poquoson.

Despite the loss, Abigail Carney put up a good performance with 28 assists, 16 digs, eight kills and four aces. Her teammate Madi Dadez added 16 digs, nine kills, four blocks and three aces.

Tabb (4-14) will prepare to hit the road during Monday’s Conference 27 tournament.

WCA Advances in Metro Tournament

After dropping the opening set of Thursday night’s Metro tournament quarterfinal match, Williamsburg Christian Academy won three consecutive sets to defeat Atlantic Shores Chrstian 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-19.

The Eagles were led by Patricia Davie, who put up a monster triple double of 18 kills, 16 blocks and 13 digs. Also contributing to the win was Anah Taylor with 14 kills and seven digs, as well as Nicole Musfelt with 31 assists and 12 blocks.

WCA (14-6) will prepare to visit Denbigh Baptist in the Metro tournament semifinal round Saturday.

HRA Sweeps Norfolk Collegiate

Hampton Roads Academy ended its regular season on a high note, defeating Norfolk Collegiate 25-12, 25-20, 25-18 on the road Thursday.

Led by Megan Lee’s 12 kills and nine digs, HRA cruised through all three sets without facing any real danger from Norfolk Collegiate.

HRA (10-12) ends its season on a hot streak having won four of its last five matches.

The Navigators will now await their opponent in Tuesday’s Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools tournament.
