The Bruton Panthers took control of their game against Churchland early, scoring four goals in the first half en route to a 5-3 victory Wednesday.

Andrew Maeso led the charge for Bruton (4-1) in the first half, scoring two of his three goals before halftime. He netted the first goal of the game early on, but Churchland was quick to tie the game minutes later.

The Churchland (0-2) goal sparked a fire under the Panthers offense, which reeled off three consecutive goals to extend their lead to 4-1.

Just as the game seemed out of hand, Churchland found the back of the net twice during the last five minutes of the first half. The Panthers held a 4-3 lead heading into halftime.

Maeso scored the only goal of the second half, completing the hat trick and adding an insurance run for Bruton.

The Panthers will look to continue its hot start to the season during Tuesday’s game against Lafayette, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cooley Field.

Madison Van Dyke Leads York Girls Soccer to Shutout Win

Madison Van Dyke found the back of the net once each half to help lead York to a 2-0 road victory against Colonial Heights (0-3) on Wednesday.

In the first half, York’s Madison Dillard sent in a free kick from the midfield area. The ball sailed into the box and Van Dyke’s foot made contact with the ball, redirecting it into the goal for the only score of the first half.

With 5:20 left to play in the second half, Van Dyke lofted a free kick from 30 yards out over Colonial Heights goalkeeper Alex Stanford and into the upper-90 area of the goal.

York goalie Trinity Choice turned away four shots during the shutout win.

The Falcons move to 2-0-2 on the season and will face New Kent on the road 7 p.m. Monday.
