York’s softball team took advantage of seven Bruton errors to cruise to an 11-1 victory Wednesday.
The game lasted five innings, instead of seven, due to the Virginia High School League’s 10-run mercy rule.
Falcon batters repeatedly drilled hard shots at Bruton pitcher Kelsey Sluss, resulting in fielding errors by the Panthers.
York scored three runs off Bruton errors, including two from Devon Smith and one from Maddi Capps.
York (3-1) built up a 5-0 lead over the first two innings before DaSha Hill got Bruton (1-2) on the board with an RBI triple at the top of the third inning.
While the Panthers struggled to figure out York pitcher Chelsea Evans, the Falcons continued to rough up Sluss.
With York leading 9-1 in the fifth inning, Falcons coach Ashley Meredith put in her reserve players hoping to both give them some experience and prevent the 10-run rule from cutting the game short.
The York backups managed to drive in two runs in the bottom of the fifth, causing the game to end at 11-1.
York will continue its season on the road against Grafton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Bruton will host Jamestown at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
