Six games into the season for Christopher Newport University’s men’s basketball team, and former Bruton High standout Marcus Carter is thriving as one of the Captains’ top performers.
Coming off the best performance of his rookie season in CNU’s 85-67 win over Frostburg State on Saturday, Carter has started all six games, played the second-most minutes on the team (26.3 mpg) and is the Captains’ second leading scorer averaging just shy of 17 points per contest.
On Saturday, Carter poured in a career-high 26 points on 10 of 14 shots and pulled down 12 rebounds to help lead CNU (5-1) win its third game in a row.

Carter, who graduated from Bruton in June, had originally committed to play Division I ball for the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore before deciding to transfer to CNU late last summer.
Carter led the Panthers to back-to-back state tournament appearances as a junior and senior and was voted to the 2A all-state team both seasons.
He averaged 26 points and six rebounds per game last winter in helping Bruton capture both the Conference 33 and 2A East Region titles before the Panthers lost to Dan River in the 2A state final.
Carter and the Captains will return to the floor this Sunday when they host Virginia Wesleyan at CNU’s Freeman Center.
