York’s softball team held a 3-1 lead against Colonial Heights in the bottom of the fourth inning of Wednesday’s Colonial Conference 25 semifinal when lightning became visible in the York County area, forcing play to be suspended.
Falcons Coach Amy Hunter said the plan is to finish the final three-and-a-half innings at 5 p.m. Thursday, ahead of the 7 p.m. conference championship game.
Park View (South Hill) defeated New Kent 2-0 in the first semifinal held at York High and will await the York-Colonial Heights winner to begin the conference final.
York seized an early 1-0 lead in the second inning Wednesday after Hannah Hautz led off with a double then later scored after Destiny Martinez poked a single through the left side of the infield.
The Falcons went ahead 3-0 in the third thanks to Devon Smith, whose single to left field plated Lia Batchelor and Maddie Rogerson, who led off the frame with back-to-back base knocks.
Falcons pitcher Molly Rogerson did not allow her first hit of the game until the fourth inning, when Amber Harris drove in Lindsay Nowland with a double to right field.
York was exiting the field preparing to bat in the bottom of the fourth when the game was called.
In addition to earning a place in the championship game immediately following, Thursday’s winner is also guaranteed a spot in next week’s 3A East Region tournament.
