York’s girls tennis team will make a state tournament appearance for the first time in school history next week.
The Falcons punched their ticket Wednesday after defeating James Monroe 5-0 in the 3A East Region semis.
The anticipated semifinal matchup, which was played in Richmond, pitted the only two remaining unbeaten teams in Class 3A. York Coach Steve Fisher said he believes the difference was his girls were far more battle-tested than their opponents.
In four different singles matches, the Falcons (14-0) dropped the first set but rallied each time to win in three.
Gabi Tersigni at No. 2 and Casey Jutras at No. 6 won in straight sets for York.
“We had played a lot of tough teams, especially in the Bay Rivers District, this season,” Fisher said. “That paid off. You could tell once we got deep into matches and started to put pressure on them.”
Before making their first-ever state-tournament appearance, the Falcons will take aim at the program’s first regional crown.
York will play the winner of Lafayette-Warren County match, which was postponed Wednesday and will be made up at noon today — in Friday’s 3A East Region final on the Falcons’ home courts.
