Jamestown’s No. 1 boys and girls doubles teams won three matches on Friday en route to capturing the inaugural 4A Conference 19 crowns.
Derrick Nielson and Grayson DeBerry cruised through the first two rounds, dropping three combined games against Tabb’s Jimmy Qing and John Svendsen (6-2, 6-0) and Grafton’s Nir Diskin and Zeke Tal (6-0, 6-1) but had to overcome a tough battle against Powhatan’s Evan Pfab and Nick Furbee in the final.
Nielson and DeBerry dropped the first set 4-6, but rallied to win the final two 6-2, 6-4.
Anna Walter and Mairin Shea took a slightly different path to their doubles title.
They overcame their toughest test of the day in the semifinals against Bay Rivers District rivals Sophia Lin and Kayla Jefferson in the semifinals before handling Powhatan’s Olivia Chadwick and Cecilia Fleming in the final 6-2, 6-2.
Walter and Shea beat Grafton’s Lin and Jefferson during the regular season but lost in the team portion of the conference tournament as the Clippers went on to claim the title.
Friday was another closely contested battle as the teams split the first two sets — Jamestown took the first 6-3 before dropping the second 3-6 — before the Eagles’ tandem took the third set 6-2 to clinch the victory.
Both of Jamestown’s doubles teams earned No. 1 seeds in the 4A South Region individual tournament in two weeks.
