WILLIAMSBURG — Warhill’s junior varsity football team opened its season Wednesday with a 46-7 win over Tabb, combining 550 yards of total offense with three interceptions.
The victory also reunited many of the players and coaches who helped Toano Middle School win the Bay Rivers District championship last season, ending a championship drought of nearly two decades.
Many of Toano’s coaches were hired to lead Warhill’s JV team following last season, while several of the players moved on to Warhill.
Quarterback Tony Short completed 12 of 18 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns.
Brenden Elliott had seven receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylen Wills accounted for four touchdowns, rushing for 62 yards and two touchdowns while adding 116 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Daniel Chavez had an 84-yard reception. Ja’Cory Collins rushed seven times for 17 yards and a touchdown, while Hooks added 30 yards on four carries.
Warhill also recorded three interceptions. Eli DaSilva, Wills and Elliott each had one.
Chavez, DaSilva and Moore led the Lions with seven tackles apiece, while Collins recorded a sack.
Tristian Hassell also had two tackles on kickoff coverage.
For many of the players and coaches, Wednesday’s game marked the continuation of a run that began at Toano.
Last season, Toano won the Bay Rivers District championship after going nearly two decades without a title. This season, many of those players and coaches are together again at Warhill.
The Lions are scheduled to resume their campaign this Wednesday, taking on the Lafayette junior varsity squad at 6:30 p.m. at Cooley Field.
