The Score: Prep Playoff Roundup: HRA Girls Tennis, Field Hockey, Volleyball Advance to State Semis

It was a big night for Hampton Roads Academy athletics Tuesday, as the Navigators’ field hockey , volleyball and girls tennis teams each won their opening-round matchups in the VISAA Division 2 tournament to advance to the state semifinals.

As for the results:

FIELD HOCKEY

Hampton Roads Academy  2  North Cross 1 (2 OT)

After being tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the 7-on-7 overtime period, and one round of penalty strokes, Anne Waverly Spencer scored the game-winning goal in the second round of strokes to give No. 6 HRA an upset victory over No. 3 North Cross in the opening round of the VISAA Division 2 tournament. Goalkeeper Elise Ferguson had five saves to secure the victory. Tess Lawson scored HRA’s goal in regulation off an assist from Spencer. The Navigators (7-7-1) advance to play Foxcroft in the state semifinals on Friday.

 

Foxcroft 3  Williamsburg Christian Academy 0

WCA’s season ended Tuesday after the Eagles became the first team outside of girls or boys basketball to reach the VISAA Division II state tournament in school history.

 

Chancellor 2  Grafton 1

Grafton’s season ended Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to Chancellor in the Group AA state quarterfinals held at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Hampton Roads Academy def. Seton School 25-17, 25-11, 25-16

Bri Underwood finishedwith 14 kills and 7 digs, Leanna Yevak tallied 19 assists and Laura Killough added13 digs as HRA’s top-seeded volleyball team swept Seton School 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Division II tournament Tuesday. Rebecca Schell chipped in with 8 kills for the Navigators (22-2), who will face the Fredericksburg Christian-Peninsula Catholic winner in the semifinals on Friday at 8 p.m.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Hampton Roads Academy  6   Seton School  0

Top-seeded HRA needed only 45 minutes to get past Seton School (Manassas) in the opening round of the VISAA Division 3 tournament Tuesday. The Navigators (14-1) will play for a shot in the state title game on Friday against the Norfolk Collegiate-Highland winner.
