Brews and Bites: Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters and Petite Cafe

YORKTOWN — Brews and Bites is a feature series that showcases locally-owned food and drink establishments in the Historic Triangle.

Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters and Petite Café has been a staple of historic Yorktown for 16 years. Owned by Celeste and Jo Gucanac, this is a destination that both local residents can be proud of and also draws many visiting tourists.

Located in two Colonial National Historical Parks, the original building structure dates from before the Revolutionary War.

“Our mission as a business is to lease, take care of backlog maintenance, renovate, maintain and create unique destinations and expertly created products in National Park buildings on Main Street in Yorktown,” said Celeste, who also owns Little York Confectionary just down the block.

“These buildings would otherwise be vacant and in need of repair. Our company researches and complies to all National Park Historic compliance for everything we do to breathe life back into the buildings. We have created a destination in our block in Yorktown Village that hearkens back to the bustling port that Yorktown once was. In the 17th and 18th century, this stretch of Main Street was the location where imports from the port were weighed and taxed, merchants then made products to sell, and many people came here to purchase items to meet their needs,” Gucanac continues, “Mobjack and Little York do just that once again. We import coffee beans from around the world, have them delivered to us right here on our corner, then blend, roast, create, cook, bake, shape, cut, package and sell our exquisite quality products right here in the heart of Historic Yorktown.”

Executive Chef Mary Ammons assists in creating roasted coffees and fresh-from-scratch menu items and baked goods.

“We proudly serve our own signature roasted coffees, espresso drinks, iced coffees, freshly brewed teas, wine, and locally crafted beers,” stated Gucanac. “Our menu items are all made from scratch … sandwiches, salads, paninis, and loads of in-house baked goods. Our made-from-scratch oatmeal cream pie cookie was featured in Food and Wine Magazine and our expertly roasted coffees were featured in Bon Appétit magazine!”

The average price point is under $20 for a freshly-made sandwich, coffee drink and sweet treat.

Both indoor and outdoor seating is available. Leashed pets are allowed in the outdoor dining space.
