WILLIAMSBURG— The Williamsburg Police Department hosted a beam signing ceremony for its new Williamsburg Police Station on Friday, July 19.

Henderson Inc. and architectural firm Moseley Architects comprise the design-build team for this project. The city said that the new, 43,400-square-foot station is slated to open in its new location, 715 Lafayette St., in the fall of 2025.

“In 2017 when I arrived, there was an effort underway to rehab our existing police building,” said Williamsburg Police Chief Sean Dunn. “Unfortunately, even the best rehab would not have given us the space, the infrastructure, the technology, to be able to serve our community the way we would like to serve our community. So it is with great pleasure that I recognize our city council and their leadership and their wisdom for getting this done for us. We are very grateful.”

The Williamsburg Police Department first moved into its current building in approximately 1978. Earlier this year an information was held to discuss what the new police building would entail.

“We are excited to celebrate this milestone for the new Williamsburg Police Station with the public,” Mayor Douglas Pons said in a press release for the event. “Our officers and this community are deserving of a state-of-the-art police station that can provide the best platform for public safety for the next 50 years.”

Last November, the Williamsburg Fire Department held a ribbon cutting to celebrate its new facilities. Pons said a new library and a new Blayton Building are also under consideration for the same downtown locations.

“All of these projects along with the new police station align with [our vision] to create and reinvigorate the Municipal campus in our downtown Williamsburg area,” Pons explained. “These projects will allow us to elevate the service that we provide our residents and visitors.”

“For a few years now the [Citizens Advisory Committee] has worked with the police department to bridge the gap between the police department and the community,” said Citizens Advisory Committee Chair Malika Blume. “Working with the police department has allowed us to better understand the needs for both the department and the community.”

“This new building will provide better space and equipment to make things more efficient for the day-to-day operations along with providing opportunities for the police department to invite the community to participate in various initiatives,” Blume continued.

The beam that was signed during the event will be placed in a location above the facility’s basement and will support the rest of the building length of the building’s existence. Members of city council, state legislators, city leadership, current and former sworn and civilian members of the Williamsburg Police Department were all invited to sign the beam.

More information can be found about the project on the official Police Station Project page, including the timeline of events.
