WILLIAMSBURG 一 High temperatures topping 100 degrees are expected in the Williamsburg area over the holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for the area from Thursday, July 2 through Friday, July 3.
The weather service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sun exposure and check on relatives and neighbors. It also warns against leaving young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.
In 2024, the National Weather Service reported 529 deaths due to heat, shooting past the ten and 30 year averages of 273 and 211 respectively.
Residents and visitors can find air-conditioned relief at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd., the Williamsburg Regional Library, 515 Scotland St., and James City County libraries at 7770 Croaker Rd. The facilities also offer water fountains and restrooms. Pets are not allowed, except for service animals.
Facilities will operate on adjusted holiday hours. On July 2, the recreation center will operate from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., while WRL will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On July 3, the recreation center will keep the same hours and WRL will be closed.
On July 4, JCCRC will be open starting at noon and close at 6 p.m. with the rest of the facility, including programs and amenities, remaining closed. WRL is also closed on July 4. July 5, all locations open at 1 p.m. with JCCRC closing at 6 p.m. and WRL at 5 p.m.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions as the region heads into the extreme heat.
“Even though it’s going to be hot, I hope people still are able to enjoy their weekend and just take extra precautions in order to avoid any heat-related illnesses,” said Sara Ruch, emergency service manager for James City County.
