WYDaily’s Holiday Favorites: Our Favorite Holiday Movies

(WYDaily Media)

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — It’s that time of year where you can’t go into a store, turn on the radio, nor watch certain television channels without being bombarded by the love and cheer of the holiday season. Each week, we want to share with you some of our newsroom staff’s favorites of the holiday and invite you to share with us yours!

This week’s topic? Holiday movies!

Perhaps at no surprise to my friends and colleagues, my number one choice is Tim Burton’s masterpiece, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” I’ve been known to play the music to this movie year ’round. Also topping my list is the 1970 movie musical, “Scrooge,” starring the brilliant Albert Finney. It is reflective (albeit a touch scary at times), and has music that most us late-30-somethings can relate to. I also have to give an honorable mention to my childhood favorite, “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol.”

The greatest holiday movie of all time is “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” What could be better than the legendary thespians, Gonzo and Michael Caine, taking on the roles they were born to play? The answer is nothing.

My top three favorite Christmas movies are “A Christmas Story,” “Christmas Vacation” and “Elf.” I prefer the funny, feel-good Christmas movies, so these three are definitely the ones that put me in the holiday spirit every year. It’s also a tradition for my family to watch A Christmas Story each year on Christmas Eve.

I’ve decided to pick the movie “Gremlins.” I remember watching this with my brothers and cousins when we were all kids. I was completely blown away by the little creatures that strangely resembled the Furby’s that were popular in toy stores at the time. It’s a fun movie! If you happen to receive a strange-looking/mythical pet from your dad this holiday season, just remember the three rules: (1) Keep it out of the sunlight. (2) Keep it away from water. (3) Don’t ever feed it after midnight! Happy Holidays!

“Die Hard,” and it’s not close. Saving Christmas is a common trope in Christmas movies, as the forces who oppose jolly St. Nick are relentless. But Rudolph’s red nose can’t hold a Christmas candle to the muzzle flash of Bruce Willis’ machine gun as he fights to save his wife and a room full of hostages from a crack team of vault crackers on Christmas Eve. Santa doesn’t have anything in his workshop that’s half as fun as the greatest Christmas story ever told. Yippee ki-yay.
