Michael Gerald Stafford, a beloved educator, craftsman, and passionate adventurer, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the age of 88. Born on July 12, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, Michael lived a life full of purpose, dedication, and exploration.
A proud alumnus of Thomas Jefferson High School in St. Louis, Class of 1956, Michael pursued higher education at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Philosophy in 1960. His love for learning and teaching led him to a fulfilling career as a high school mathematics teacher, specializing in calculus. Michael inspired countless students throughout his years at Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, South Carolina. His teaching journey also included impactful years at Annie Wright School in Tacoma, Washington, and The Park School of Buffalo, New York.
Michael’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. For 20 years, he served as a dedicated soccer coach at Christ Church Episcopal School, mentoring generations of student-athletes with the same patience, encouragement, and integrity that defined his teaching. He also possessed a remarkable talent for craftsmanship and construction. Michael built his own family home, a testament to his skill, determination, and creativity. He spent many years renovating older homes, carefully restoring them before selling them, finding great satisfaction in preserving their character and giving them new life.
A man of deep compassion and service, Michael generously volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, helping build homes for low-income families and giving his time and talents to create lasting opportunities for others. His willingness to serve reflected his belief that everyone deserved a safe place to call home.
Beyond his work and volunteerism, Michael was a fervent advocate for the outdoors. An avid hiker, canoeist, and soccer enthusiast, he found joy and tranquility in nature. His commitment to preserving natural landscapes was evident through his involvement with the Foothills Trail Club, where he proudly served as president. His adventurous spirit also led him to travel extensively throughout the world, broadening his horizons and enriching his life through new cultures and experiences.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Christopher W. Stafford; his mother, Helen S. Stafford; his brother, Christopher B. Stafford; and his son-in-law, Gregory S. Hancock.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Diana Z. Stafford; his cherished daughters, Elizabeth A. Stafford and Sarah L. Stafford; and his beloved grandchildren, Oliver M. Stafford and Meghan L. Hancock. His legacy of wisdom, generosity, craftsmanship, and enthusiasm for life will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service to celebrate Michael’s life will be held at a later date at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Sierra Club in Michael’s honor, reflecting his lifelong commitment to environmental conservation.
Michael Gerald Stafford will be remembered as an exceptional teacher, devoted coach, skilled craftsman, faithful steward of the natural world, and loving husband, father, and grandfather whose life touched countless others and whose spirit will continue to inspire for generations to come.
