It is with profound sadness and enduring pride that we announce the passing of Sgt. Tyrique Gilliam, U. S. Army, who departed this life on July 1, 2026, in his hometown of Newport News, VA, at the age of 27. Born on December 11, 1998, Tyrique was a beacon of strength, joy, and unwavering confidence to all who knew him.
A proud alumnus of Menchville High School’s Class of 2017, Tyrique pursued higher education at Old Dominion University, where he studied Political Science. His academic endeavors were complemented by his passion for service, leading him to join the U.S. Army, where he served with honor and dedication as an active-duty sergeant.
Tyrique’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of family, friendship, and fitness. He loved going to the gym daily, embracing the discipline and challenge of weightlifting. Known for his social nature, Tyrique cherished moments spent with friends and family, often enlivening gatherings with his playful jokes and infectious laughter. His joyful spirit and poised demeanor inspired those around him, instilling confidence and courage in everyone he encountered.
Among his greatest joys was the time he spent with his beloved son, Zion Gilliam. As a father, Tyrique was devoted and loving, always striving to create a world full of possibilities and happiness for Zion. He leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration that will continue to guide his son’s path.
Tyrique is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Wesley Lee Gilliam, a Vietnam Veteran, and Phyllis Givens Wilson. He is survived by his parents, Kimsley Sr. and Anita Gilliam, his siblings Jasmine Latric Thomas (Ray), Devonte Thomas, Kimsley Gilliam Jr. (Shamonique), and Ralph Noguchi, as well as his grandparents Marion West and Henry Peterson.
Also cherishing his memory are his aunts and uncles, Cynthia Peterson (Henry May), Regina Peterson, Bridget Gilliam, Lachette Peterson, Richard Peterson, and Timothy Gilliam. His nieces and nephew, Hailey Marie Ferguson Adamson, Kimori Gilliam, Kimora Gilliam, and Athena C., along with his dear friend Joshua Daley, will forever hold him close in their hearts. A host of cherished extended family and friends also survive him, carrying forward his spirit of confidence and joy.
Interment will take place on Wednesday, July 15, at 1 p.m. at Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
In remembering Tyrique, we celebrate a life lived with valor, love, and an unyielding zest for life. Though he has departed from this earthly realm, his spirit remains eternally vibrant in the lives of those he touched.
