James Thomas Mayfield, 84, of Williamsburg

James Thomas Mayfield passed away on May 13, 2026. He was born January 6, 1942 and grew up in West Newton, PA. He Graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

He was employed by Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, PA as an engineer, and as a manager of Electrical systems. His work was mainly designing power systems on the nuclear powered aircraft carriers. There is where he met his beloved wife Janice.

In the early ‘70s he was transferred to Newport News VA for 3 years for a field assignment for the building of the Aircraft Carrier Nimitz.

He retired after 40 years of service. After retirement James and his wife moved to Williamsburg , VA.

He was a quiet family centered man. He enjoyed gardening, football, reading and was especially interested in history and the Civil War.

James was a member of Saint Stephens Lutheran Church. He was active in the From His Hands ministry, providing meals to the hungry and homeless in local motels.

James is Proceeded in death by his mother Margaret (Dale) Mayfield and his father John Mayfield and his brother Jack Mayfield. He is Survived by his wife of 54 years Janice (Failoni) Mayfield, a Daughter Teresa Berman (Michael) Pop to grandsons Alexander & Elliot. A Son Patrick Mayfield (Stacey Gilchrist), Grandpa to grandsons Simon& Baxter, and many nieces and nephews.
