Gene Edward Watkins, a loyal and highly intelligent man who was dedicated to his family and country, passed away on May 16, 2026, in Suffolk, Virginia. Born on August 20, 1958, in Elmira, New York, Gene lived a life full of love, laughter, and service, reaching the age of 67.

A proud New Yorker, Gene graduated from Corning Painted Post West High School in New York. He went on to serve his country with distinction in the military, retiring with honor. He had several deployments in Guam, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Diego Garcia. Following his military career, he worked as a heavy equipment operator, where his skills and work ethic were highly regarded.

Gene had a passion for reading history books and was known for his vast collection of knowledge. He enjoyed fishing, humorously referring to it as “feeding the fish” when he returned empty-handed. A lover of games, he excelled at darts and was a formidable opponent in Jeopardy, often knowing all the answers. In his youth, he enjoyed bowling and took great joy in participating in activities during his daughter’s life.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Albert Watkins. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Jayme Watkins, whom he considered his greatest accomplishment. He also leaves behind his devoted mother, Joan Wagner Watkins; his sister, Vicki Mueller, and her husband, Gary; his nephew, Casey Mueller; and the mother of his daughter and dear friend, Evelyn Wilcox. For over 20 years, Gene shared his life with his cherished partner, Joanne Swan. He was also a loving dog grandfather to Harley Savannah and Luke.

Gene was the life of the party, with a natural charisma that drew people to him. His sense of humor and wit were unmatched, and he remained true to himself even in sickness. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in New York, where he will be honored with full military honors.

Gene Edward Watkins will be remembered as a dedicated father, a loyal friend, and a man who brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. His legacy of love and intelligence will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
