Joseph Spruill Jr., a brother, uncle and friend, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 78. Born on February 22, 1948, in North Carolina, Joseph lived a life marked by dedication and love for his family and country.
Joseph proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, exemplifying the values of honor, courage, and commitment. His service to his nation was a testament to his character and dedication.
In his leisure time, Joseph was an avid sports enthusiast, particularly enjoying watching football and basketball. His passion for sports brought joy to his life and to those who shared in these moments with him.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joseph Spruill Sr. and Estelle Douglas Spruill; his sisters, Glenn Ann Spruill, Josephine Spruill Perry, and Stella Spruill-Bagwell; his brother, Steven Spruill; and his grandmother, Josephine Douglas.
Joseph is survived by his sister, Deloris Lawrence (Keith) of Huntsville, Alabama; his brother, Joe Ford (Diane) of Chesapeake, Virginia; his brother-in-law, Allen Perry of Elizabeth City, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.
A memorial service to honor Joseph’s life will be held at a later date in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Joseph Spruill Jr.’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
