Richard Paul Haagen, born on July 30, 1954, in Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully at the age of 71 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on April 20, 2026. His life was a testament to dedication, resilience, and kindness, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Richard served his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. His steadfast commitment to the values of duty and loyalty exemplified the Marine Corps motto of “Semper Fi,” and those principles guided him throughout his life.
Beyond his military service, Richard found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a private gentleman who delighted in the world of television, enjoying everything from the animated antics of Tom and Jerry to the classic western drama of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. A fan of game shows, he never missed an episode of The Price is Right, and his love for action movies was well-known among his friends and family.
Richard’s competitive spirit shone through in his love for games such as Snyder Rummy, Uno, and Monopoly, where his good-natured trash talking brought laughter to many family gatherings. His green thumb revealed his talent for gardening, while his mechanical skills were evident in his knack for automotive repair.
A man of quiet faith, Richard was a member of the Catholic community, living his values through actions rather than words. He found great fulfillment in completing projects with his grandchildren, cherishing the moments spent together. His stern yet helpful nature endeared him to all, as he would readily fix a car or pick up groceries for those in need.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Naomi, and his sisters, Mary and Kathy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Linda; his daughters, Janise, Norlina and Mike, Adriana and her husband Matt; and his goddaughter, Samantha. His memory will be forever cherished by his grandchildren: Alex, Kayla, Zachary, Ava, and Emma, who were the light of his life as well as many other loving relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 1st, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive in Virginia Beach. A service will follow the visitation. Richard will be laid to rest in Ohio at a later date. Contributions in his name may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church.
