Carolyn Hurdle Sanders (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

Carolyn Hurdle Sanders, 94, of Newport News, VA, passed away on Thursday March 26, 2026 at her home.

Born in Belvidere, NC, Mrs. Sanders moved to the Peninsula in the mid-1950’s after graduating from Guilford College in North Carolina. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education from Old Dominion University. She was an English teacher at Warwick H.S. and Denbigh H.S. throughout her time in the Newport News Public School System. In addition, she taught a GED class to Army personnel at St. Leo College at Fort Eustis.

Mrs. Sanders was a long-time member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, St. Jude’s Guild and the Woman’s Club of Hilton Village. She enjoyed spending time with her Bridge Group, volunteering at the Grissom Public Library as well as reading and discussing books with her Book Club. She cherished her trips to Nags Head with her family and friends.

Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents, Jerome and Flora Hurdle; her husband of 50 years, Thomas B. Sanders; her sisters, Florine S. Weeks, Alice Hofler and Delma Dale and her brother, D.T. Hurdle. She is survived by her sons, Bruce Sanders and his wife, Maria, Brian Sanders and his wife, Gay, and Eric Sanders and his wife, Pamela, and her grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole Sanders.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, 2026 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church by Rev. Saul Anleu with interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society or Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church – Building Fund.
