David M. Smith, born January 6, 1956, passed away on February 26, 2026. He was born at Langley Air Force Base and grew up in England until the age of 13.
David was the beloved husband of Bonnie, the love of his life, whom he met during his years at Canon, where he worked for 18 years before retiring. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
He was a devoted stepfather to Bonnie’s two sons, Andrew (Tiffany) and Zachary (Paige), and a cherished “bonus” daughter, Elizabeth Collawn (Will). David was a proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and is also survived by extended family, including Trina Robertson and Janet McDonald.
Throughout his life, David worked many different jobs, always learning a little about a lot along the way. He was very artistic and had a deep appreciation for creativity and expression.
David loved the water and never wanted to be far from it. He also had a passion for travel; nothing made him happier than an unplanned car trip and the adventure that came with it.
Loving, giving, and full of humor, David was deeply rooted in his faith. He often said he was like Popeye — “I am what I am” — and he truly lived that way: take it or leave it.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A special thank you to Dr. Kevin Sing and the staff at the VOA.
