John Gary Strama, a dedicated husband, father, and friend, passed away at the age of 71 on August 15, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia. Born on February 13, 1954, in Pennsylvania, John lived a life filled with passion, service, and unwavering love for those around him.
A proud veteran, John faithfully served his country in the United States Navy before embarking on a successful career as a government contractor with Little Creek Amphibious Base. His commitment to excellence and his organized, neat approach were evident in all he undertook.
John was a man of vibrant spirit and contagious joy, often filling a room with laughter as the life of the party. His booming voice and keen sense of humor made him an unforgettable presence. Yet, behind his jovial exterior, John was a man of deep faith and compassion. A devout Catholic, he carried his beliefs in his heart and expressed them through acts of kindness and forgiveness. He understood the brevity of life and embraced it with generosity and thoughtfulness.
An avid golfer, John found joy in the game as he did in life—balancing precision with playfulness. He cultivated many friendships on the greens, where his lively personality and gentlemanly conduct shone brightly.
John is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Frank and Catherine Strama (née Shinski), brother Frank and sisters Antoinette and Catherine. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Elena; his loving daughters Maureen (Doug) and Stephanie (Brian); cherished grandchildren Braydn, Sabrielle, and Rhyland; and dear siblings Patty, Mary, and Richard (Christine).
A service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 1 PM, preceded by a viewing from 11 AM until 1 PM. John will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
