Don Illjes, born October 9, 1950, in Queens, New York, completed his life’s work on July 19, 2025, passing away peacefully at the age of 74 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
A master carpenter by trade, Don’s true craft was building a life of purpose and connection. With hands that could measure twice and cut once, he taught us that the strongest structures are built on a foundation of integrity and care. He didn’t just erect buildings; he crafted communities, framing friendships and assembling relationships that have proven timeless.
His passion for creation extended to his hobbies. Don found immense joy in the intricate worlds of model trains and in the powerful grace of planes, trains, and automobiles. He saw the same wonder in the meticulous design of a miniature engine as he did in a locomotive thundering down the tracks, a passion that sparked curiosity in all who knew him.
A member of what he called the “Church of Life,” Don believed in a hands-on spirituality. His life was his sermon, demonstrating that a legacy of kindness and wisdom is built one good deed at a time.
The blueprint of his love lives on through his family. He is survived by his son, Scott; his grandson, Matthew; and his beloved companion, Martha. He was a father, grandfather, and friend who generously opened his heart, making family out of friends. He now joins his parents, Else Gertrude Vollmer and Carl Bode.
In accordance with Don’s wishes, no formal services will be held. His legacy is not etched in stone but is built into the lives he touched. He laid a beautiful path for us, and we will honor him by walking it with the same strength and generosity he showed us every day. The framework of his love will shelter us always.
