Laverne Wilson Shaffer, 83, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, in Barhamsville, Virginia. A devoted nurse, cherished family member, and pillar of her community, she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, and love.

Born on June 23, 1941, in Axton, Virginia, Laverne was the daughter of Lottie Bonnie Martin and John Lewis Wilson Sr. She grew up in a close-knit family and carried the values instilled in her throughout her life. After graduating from Drewry Mason High School in Ridgeway, VA, she pursued her passion for helping others by attending Norfolk General to become a registered nurse. Her dedication to healthcare led her to further her education with a Master’s degree in nursing.

Laverne served as a nurse in the United States Air Force during the late 1960s—a testament to her commitment to both country and care. Her nursing career spanned over four decades, during which she touched countless lives with her skill and compassion. She was also the co-founder of Brookside Home Health, where she extended her mission of healing into the homes of those who needed it most.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Laverne was deeply involved in charitable work. She organized and participated in numerous charity efforts throughout her life. She was a founding member of Rotary Club #31064 and an active member of VFW Post 8046 for many years—organizations that reflected her enduring spirit of service.

Laverne’s personal life was filled with joy and meaningful connections. She shared many happy years with her beloved husband Raymond Foster Shaffer until his passing. Together they enjoyed bowling, reading, and working on puzzles—simple pleasures that brought them closer together. But above all else, Laverne treasured time spent with family: playing cards around the table, sharing meals, or simply sitting together in conversation.

She is survived by her son John Raymond Shaffer of Virginia; stepdaughter Sue Babb; grandchildren William Jr. Babb and Angelia Thomas; four great-grandchildren—Johnathan, Morgan, Zachary, and Mason—all of South Carolina; and her sister Edna Collins of Virginia. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will remember her warmth and generosity.

Laverne was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Foster Shaffer; sisters Joyce Hoar; brothers Gerald Wilson, Herman Wilson, John Wilson Jr., and Buddie Wilson; as well as her parents.

A devout Christian raised as a Baptist, Laverne lived out her faith through acts of kindness and unwavering support for those around her. She was known to all for her kind heart and generosity—a true reflection of the values she held dear.

May the memory of Laverne Wilson Shaffer bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. Her life was one of purpose and grace—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be part of it.
