James Leighton Bean, 96, of Surgoinsville, Tennessee

James Leighton Bean (Bucktrout Funeral Home)

Born in the Stanley Valley near Surgoinsville, Tennessee, he was the fourth child of Thomas C. and Hazel E. Bean. His upbringing in Rural Tennessee shaped his work ethic and outlook on life in quiet but lasting ways.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine M. Bean; his brothers, Herman and Donald Bean; and his sister, Mildred Brice.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons, James M. and John D. Bean; his grandchildren, Sean M. Bean, James S. Bean, Victoria L. Schwartz, Mary Jo Finley, Andrew M. Bean and Catherine M. Bean; and his five great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great pride and joy.

After graduating from high school, he earned a degree in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Technological University. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he honorably served as a deep-sea diver aboard the USS Grasp.

Following his military service, he pursued his passion for learning, studying law at Indiana University and George Washington University. He went on to build a distinguished career in Washington, DC, Patent and Trademark Law with dedication and integrity until his retirement at age 80.

He was a steady and thoughtful presence, someone who found comfort in quiet routines and simple pleasures.

Funeral and interment will be private.
