Dorothy “Dot” Jean Spivey, born January 1, 1931, in Burlington, NC, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the age of 94.
Throughout her working years she fulfilled several roles within her community that allowed her to work diligently, with grace and dedication. She took pride in these roles that varied, and consisted, of being a typist in the Pentagon, cashier, piano and Bible teacher, seamstress and house cleaner. But her role as a bookkeeper, balancing numbers with precision and integrity, was one that continued throughout the years and into her marriage, assisting her husband with their own business. Beyond her professional life, her most cherished role was that of a homemaker and mother to her four children and grandmother to all her grand and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy’s life was a testament to her deep faith and her love for teaching the Bible. Baptized on March 14, 1959, she has been a devoted Jehovah’s Witness and attended worship at the Kingdom Hall in Williamsburg. Here she found joy in sharing her beliefs, with wisdom and compassion, touching the lives of those around her.
Her passion was working with her hands and being creative. From painting to playing the piano for all who would listen, her passions also extended into her garden. To her family, she was a master gardener, and everyone delighted in the vibrant colors of her flowers. Each blossom reflected her hard work and dedication to the beauty that Jehovah provided.
Dorothy treasured every moment spent with her beloved ones, past and present. She is preceded in death by her late mother and father, Pearl Hillard and Lester Brady. And by her devoted husband, James A. Spivey (A.C.). She is survived by her four children; Brenda Nappi (Jimmy) of Salisbury, MD., James A Spivey (Fair) of Everett, WA., Thomas Spivey (Sherri) of Richmond, VA., Ronald Spivey (Brenda) of Williamsburg, VA. Grandchildren; Jessica Bull, Scott Spivey, Rebecca Young, Brandon Waltrip, Joel Nappi, Amy-Lynne Waltrip, Jared Nappi, Jacob Boarman-Spivey, Mitchell Boarman-Spivey and Annie Spivey, and 11 Great-Grandchildren. Her gentle spirit will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.
