Richard E. Lane of Chesapeake, a man who truly loved life and lived it with quiet strength and unwavering kindness, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2025, at the age of 93.
Born on September 27, 1931, in North Carolina to David and Sybil Lane, Richard lived a life defined by service, simplicity, and deep appreciation for the world around him. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, and after his military service, he continued his commitment to public service by working as a civilian contractor with the United States Coast Guard.
He was preceded in rest by his brother, William D. Lane (“Bill”), and is survived by his loving son, Jeffrey S. Lane, and daughter-in-law, Barbara P. Lane, who carry forward his memory with love and gratitude.
Richard had a deep connection to the natural beauty of his home state, especially the Outer Banks. He found peace by the sea and joy in the rhythm of the waves. One of his favorite places in the world was the lighthouse in Corolla, North Carolina—a symbol of the steadfast, guiding presence he was to so many. An avid fisherman, Richard could often be found casting a line into the ocean, where he felt most at ease.
Known for his strength of character and generous spirit, Richard never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need. He lived without pretense, fully content with the life he had built, and inspired others to appreciate the simple joys of each day.
Richard’s legacy is one of honor, service, and heartfelt kindness. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date to honor and celebrate Richard’s remarkable life.
