With the spirit of a fighter and the heart of a giant, Floyd Altares—known to friends and family as “Mr. Flex”—passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 57. Born November 22, 1967, in Annapolis, Maryland, Floyd lived each day with energy that couldn’t be contained and love that touched everyone around him.
To be around Floyd meant you were greeted with a smile. He formed connections throughout his time in JROTC, working at the Commissary / Exchange, night shifts at Sam’s Club, and throughout the places he called home.
Mr. Flex wasn’t just a nickname; it was a way of living with an unmeasured dedication. The years of Tae Kwon Do, football, and track led Floyd to a life of bodybuilding, with trophies and medals to show. This journey also led him into trying out for a chance to compete on the show, American Gladiator.
But behind the muscles was a man of deep compassion. He loved to jam out with 80’s freestyle while cleaning his car, good food with his family and friends, and of course, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys! Floyd had a heart rooted in service, and although he was unable to follow his dream of joining the military, it didn’t stop him from volunteering in his community or supporting friends and neighbors. He showed up with the same dedicated heart he would have brought to a uniform.
He was a devoted father to Austin, a big brother to Jerry, Troy (Cindy), Marisa (Ryan), Diane (Lorielee), and he was also a caring uncle to Quyen, Ami, Christopher, Shane, Keanu, Aiden, Taylor, Giselle, Grayson, and Collin. Floyd now reunites with his parents, Felix and Juanita Altares, where they can enjoy pancit and lumpia as a family again.
Whether he was cheering on a game, breaking a sweat, or cracking a joke, Floyd lived a humble and simple life. He showed us what it means to rise strong and remain resilient. From beginning to end, and all the challenges in between, he never failed to show the best version of himself.
A reception service to celebrate Floyd’s life will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. In true Mr. Flex fashion, the family invites guests to skip the formal wear and instead wear their favorite superhero shirt in Floyd’s honor—because he lived like a real-life superhero every day, full of strength, heart, and courage.
