David Scott, 61, of Chesapeake

David Scott (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

David Scott, 61, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away on April 2, 2025. Born on September 24, 1963, in Gary, Indiana, he was the son of Mr. Elmer and Mrs. Donna Scott.

David graduated from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida, in 1982. In 1983, he moved with his mother and sister to Dahlgren, VA, while his father worked for the Navy in Washington, D.C. The family finally settled in Chesapeake, VA, in 1984, where David would build a life filled with service, dedication, and deep connections.

In December 1988, David joined the United States Navy, serving with honor until his retirement from active duty in December 2008. His commitment to the Navy continued as he transitioned into a civilian role, where he remained a valued member of the naval community.

A passionate and accomplished runner, David was a 27-time full-distance marathoner. He completed his first marathon—a 26-mile course in Subic Bay, Philippines—on March 26, 1980, at just 16 years old. He ran the Shamrock Marathon for the first time in 1986 and participated in it numerous times afterward. Since 1998, David became known for proudly carrying the American flag from start to finish in every marathon he ran. His final three marathons—the Shamrock Marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, and the Richmond Marathon—were all completed in 2011.

Beyond his dedication to service and running, David found his greatest joy in family and friendship. He and his beloved wife, Cynthia, were longtime members of Elizabeth River Baptist Church. Together, they cherished long walks with their Chihuahua mix, Toby, and enjoyed cookouts and good times with dear friends.

David is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia; his children, James and Donna; his mother, Donna; his sister, Sandra (Casey) Dillow; and his faithful companion, Toby. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer.

As a devoted sailor, marathoner, husband, father, and friend, David lived a life of unwavering dedication and love. We honor his journey with the traditional sailor’s farewell: “Fair winds and following seas.”

Service details will be announced as they become finalized.
