Patricia Ann Hickman Smith, 81, of Newport News

Patricia Ann Hickman Smith (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Patricia Ann Hickman Smith, lovingly known as “Pat,” was born on July 11, 1943, in Washington, North Carolina, and passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 81. Her life was a testament to kindness, love, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Pat’s professional journey was marked by her unwavering commitment and exceptional skills as an office manager. She devoted over 28 years of her career to Peninsula Funeral Home before continuing her vocation with Altmeyer Funeral Home, where she served diligently for over 15 years. Her work was more than just a job; it was a calling, and she was cherished by her colleagues and all who encountered her gentle spirit.

A fervent Disney enthusiast, Pat made countless cherished memories at Disney World, relishing the magic and joy it brought to her life. Equally, she found solace and beauty in the serene surroundings of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Her love for dachshunds was profound, and her beloved fur babies—Halle, Tiffy, Minnie, Charms, Boo Boo, Brandy, and Sweetie—held a special place in her heart.

Pat had a unique appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, often enjoying a good tomato and mayo sandwich with a cold Pepsi or indulging in a hot dog from 7-11. Her warmth and generosity extended far beyond her immediate family, as she became a grandmother figure to many children and fur babies alike.

A devout member of Langley Christian Church, Pat’s faith informed her compassionate nature and inspired her to offer help wherever it was needed. Her kind-heartedness was legendary, and her legacy of love and support will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Elsie Hickman; her husband, Henry Rawls Smith, Jr.; and her brother, William “Bill” Hickman. She is survived by a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughter, Amy Smith (Stuart Blau); brothers, David Hickman (Heidi) and Gary Hickman (Hope) and their fur babies Honey and Hoops; her sister-in-law, Linda Hickman; her nieces and nephews, Jennifer Cummings (Scott) and their son Nathan, Darren Hickman, and Alissa Bledsoe (Chris) and their daughters Emilia and Aubrey. Her extended family, along with a host of beloved friends and coworkers, also mourn her passing.

In remembering Pat, may we celebrate a life well-lived with love, laughter, and an enduring dedication to those she held dear. Her spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched.
