It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Debra K. Copeland, better known as “Nana”, to those who loved her most.
She was called back to be with God on the afternoon of March 16th, 2025, in the comfort of her home. Debbie’s loving husband of almost 40 years, Bill Copeland, was by her side, as were her three children: Shane Copeland, Kara Garvin-Smith, and Krystin Shray. Nana’s greatest pride and joy were her nine grandchildren: Riley (17), Liam (12), Evan (12), Charlotte (11), Jaxon (11), Parker (9), Andrew (9), Joshua (4), and Bodie (2). The legacy of family that she so carefully nurtured will live on through them.
Born on July 4th, 1954, in Norfolk, VA to Emile and Claudette Falardeau, Debbie spent her early years in Dade County, Florida. She and Bill eventually settled in Virginia Beach, where they raised their family, and she worked for many years in the Virginia Beach school system as a teacher’s assistant, retiring as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant. After retiring from Virginia Beach school system she started working as a preschool teachers assistant at Beach Manor. She loved working there and just couldn’t get away from working with kids even after she retired. Debbie had a deep love for all things tie-dye, butterflies, and dream catchers. She was an avid crafter, particularly enjoying diamond paintings.
Some of the family’s fondest memories are of the camping trips and vacations they shared. Debbie could often be found cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events, always with a big smile and a warm hug to offer. Her eclectic personality and independent spirit were reflected in her unique style.
Debbie’s warmth, loving nature, and the sparkle in her eyes will be deeply missed by all who knew her. While we mourn her loss, we take comfort knowing that her spirit surrounds us and that one day, we will see her again, wearing tie-dye with her signature smile.
Rest in peace, Nana, until we meet again.
