Doris Crump Parker, 86, of Charles City

Doris Crump Parker (Vincent Funeral Home)

He said……“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”… on March 27th 2024, our dear mother, grandmother, aunt and friend lay down her illness and took her Saviors hand.

Doris Vernette Crump Parker entered this world on May 18, 1937 as the tenth child of Reverend Harry Crump and Gertie Williams Crump in Charles City County, Virginia. At a very early age, she was led to confess her Christian belief becoming a lifelong member of the Liberty Baptist Church. Faithfully serving until her health failed yet continuing to attend with her son Rex. Doris was educated in the public education system of Charles City County. After high school she attended Virginia State College, graduating in 1958 majoring in Business Administration.

While at Virginia State she met and married Carlton Parker. During their marriage they were blessed with two children, Monica Lynn and Rex Lamont. Later, she continued her studies at Virginia State University earning her Masters Degree in Education. Her entire teaching career was spent in Charles City County where she taught and mentored a vast number of students. She retired in 1990. Doris learned to play the piano as a young child, often telling stories of how she was paid 5 cents per Sunday and how proud her parents were! She was the pianist/organist for Liberty until her health prevented her from doing so. In addition to playing the piano she learned to play the harp. She loved traveling and participating in the Young-At-Heart club.

Doris loved to serve in any capacity and was a devoted member of the Virginia State Alumni Association, the Retired Teachers Association of Charles City and a lifetime member of the NAACP. A lover of nature, she relished walking in the early morning hours with her sister Bernice and brother- in-law Frank. Traveling was her passion and seeing God’s glory in fall foliage was one of her favorites. She enjoyed traveling throughout the country. Being the youngest in the family of 14 she was devoted to preserving and validating family history with written word, pictures and videos…OH WHAT A COLLECTION SHE POSSESSED!

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Gertie Crump; the father of her children, Carlton; her sisters, Juanita (Harmon) White, Thelma (John) White, Julia (James) Banks, Mabel (Cephas) Cotman, Viola (Herbert) Armstead; brothers, Cecil Crump, Alfred (Louise) Crump, Oliver Crump, Joan Crump, Herbert Daniel Crump, Audrey May Crump, Sydney Crump and Brother-in-Law, Frank Whiting.

She will be greatly missed by her children Monica, Rex and the “apple of her eye” her granddaughter Bree Taylor Douthitt!!! One sister, Bernice Whiting, her Sisters-In-Law, Thelma and Lillian Crump, Eula Mae Holmes (Elmer), Shirlene Greene, Jolene Parker, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, her devoted friend Arnella Chirstian, and numerous friends.

The family finds peace in the teachings in the book of 2 Corinthians 5-8 “But we are confident and have a good will to be absent rather from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” How blessed we were to love and be loved by her….TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Liberty Baptist Church, Charles City, VA.
