Gary Stephen Anderson, 60, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Friday, February 24, 2023 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Springfield, MA and moved to Virginia when he was 10. Gary was a 1980 graduate of Tabb High School and 1984 graduate of Virginia Tech. In addition to being a proud Hokie, Gary was a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
Gary spent his 33-year career in the Newport News Circuit Court Clerk’s Office retiring as the Clerk of Court. He was extremely proud of his staff and the excellent reputation of the Clerk’s Office. He was a true Family Man and all knew how he loved “his girls”. He was a devoted husband to Cathy, who he met in high school and after many path crossings, they shared a marriage of almost 35 years. Gary was a loving father to Erin, who he shared a love of football and baseball, and Kelsey, who he shared his wit and humor. He was proud to call Matt his son when he married Kelsey and he was happiest to be Grampa to Tyler. Gary was a caring son, brother, uncle, and in-law to many loved ones.
Gary is survived by his wife, Cathleen Reese Anderson; his daughter, Erin Anderson; his daughter and son-in-law, Kelsey and Matthew McCarthy; his grandson and best buddy, Tyler Stephen Anderson; his mother, Phyllis Anderson; sisters and spouses, Sharilyn and David Brown, Jodi and Michael Ward; his parents-in-law, Joan and Roger Reese; brother-in-law, Michael Reese; nieces and nephews, Melissa and Steven Guill, Brittany and Christopher Ward; and his best friend, Michael Walsh.
The family would like to thank Dr. Flavia Kostov for her compassion and care.
Gary’s family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at St. Luke’s UMC by officiant The Reverend Megan Collins.
