Vanessa Canady, 66, of Williamsburg

Vanessa Joyce Canady (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

God heard her cry, so he gently closed her eyes
and carried her to the place that God has prepared for her.

On Thursday, February 23, 2023, Vanessa Joyce Canady answered her Master’s call and went home to be with the Lord. On February 17, 1957, she was the first of six born to Claretha T. Canady and the late Robert Canady in Williamsburg, Va.

In her youth, she accepted Christ into her life and became a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church. Later in her life, she joined hands in fellowship with Chickahominy Baptist Church under the leadership of Apostle Corwin Hammond.

Vanessa attended the Williamsburg-James City County Schools and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1975. She continued her education at The National Business College in Roanoke, Va., where she received her accounting certificate in 1978. Vanessa didn’t stop there; she attended the Vocational School in Newport News, Va, and received a certificate of Banking in 1981. She started her career with Dress Barn in 1989 and soon became store manager. After over twenty years of service, she accepted a position with Belk as a Jewelry/Sales consultant.

Vanessa was a loving, caring, and sassy person that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She loved her family and had a special relationship with all her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and sisters. She loved to travel, shop, dress to impress, listen to oldies, and plan family functions. She always got it done, but with a little fuss. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her and the family has found comfort in knowing that she no longer has to suffer.

She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Canady; sister, Faye Canady; and two nieces, Krisstle Canady and Charleigh Smith.

She leaves to treasure her most fondest memories with her mother, Claretha Canady; sons, Andrae Bowman, Mark Canady, and Brian Canady (Demetria); grandchildren, Shedraya Bowman, Maki Smith, Cayden Canady, Andrae Bowman Jr., and Cree Canady; four sisters, Sylvia Young (Rodney), Robin “Punch” Canady, Marian “Annette” Smith, and Tracey Noel; twelve nephews; nine nieces; uncles, aunts, and a host of many other family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 3, 2023, at Chickahominy Baptist Church. Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Ms. Canady may be viewed in the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
