Captain David Wayne Eason put out to sea for the last time on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. David was born in Wilson, NC in July, 1944 to Gladys and Wilbur Eason. David’s father, a member of the Second Ranger Battalion was wounded during the D-Day operations on June 6, 1944. After recovering from his wounds and returning to combat, he was killed in action during the Battle of Brest on September 3, 1944. We are all certain that the first person waiting for David in heaven was his father whom he never met.
David was very fortunate that his mother met and married the late Homer Yelverton shortly after the war. Homer was the father who raised David, along with Gladys, and made David the man he would become.
David graduated from Hampton High School and went to work for the federal government shortly thereafter. After many years of service, he retired in 1999. While his job helped pay the bills, Captain Dave’s true calling was as a charter boat captain and builder of boats and men. Many a boat named “Virginian” left Fox Hill, Rudee Inlet and Hatteras Inlet with Captain David Eason at the helm. Scores of mates and fishermen learned their craft at David’s side over the next fifty years.
While the days offshore were long, especially when driving boats to Mexico, David always returned to the love of his life Joan Eason as soon as the trip was done. After many years together, David proposed to Joan on December 7, 2007 and they were married a few hours later.
The wedding formalized Cappy Dave’s role as husband, father and grandfather to Joan’s daughter Dora and her sons. Much wisdom was shared by David over the years and right up until his passing.
David is survived by wife, Joan; his daughter, Dora Fitzgerald and her husband, Tom and his three grandsons, Charles Eason Fitzgerald, William Branson Fitzgerald and Michael Thomas Fitzgerald.
A Celebration of the Life for David Wayne Eason will commence at 2:00PM on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the James River Country Club, 1500 Country Club Road, Newport News, VA.
