Nancy Pettway Cardman, 88, Worked at Verizon Until Age 80

WILLIAMSBURG — Nancy Pettway Cardman, 88, daughter of Raymond M. and Quitsna W. Pettway, passed away Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021.

She had been a resident of Williamsburg for the past 44 years. Nancy was raised in Norfolk, where she met and married her husband, Eugene J. Cardman, with whom she spent 60 years by his side until his death in 2012.

Nancy was employed nearly her whole life by the U.S. government, working as a PBX (telephone) operator in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Williamsburg, retiring in 1994. She went back to the very same job working for Verizon and finally left at the age of 80. She always said “she enjoyed her job so much it never seemed like work.” While working, she helped her husband to raise three boys, William “Whit,” Matthew “Matt” and Wesley “Wes.”

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; older sister, Ann Beisgen; and older brothers, Raymond M. Jr. and William M.

She is survived by her oldest son, William, and his wife, Cathy; middle son, Matthew, and his wife, Jennifer; youngest son, Wesley; and five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. Visitation with family will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. with a short service following at 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to your nearest animal humane society.
