Helen Reid ‘SoSo’ Leib, 92, Known For Her Cooking, Baking and Crafting Skills

NEWPORT NEWS — Helen Reid Leib, 92, also known as “SoSo” to many, went home to the Lord Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021, at her home, surrounded by her husband and family. SoSo was born in Owensboro, Ky. She was born the sixth of 10 children to the late Walter and Katie Lea Best.

She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Lee Ann Smith; and five of her siblings, Ed, Lena, Miriam, Dot and Mick.

SoSo is survived by her husband of 70 years, William “Bob” Leib; son, Rick (Lori) Leib of Newport News; daughters, Julia (David) Helveston of Virginia Beach and Liz Leib (Teri Andrews) of Washington, N.C.; son-in-law, Jay W. Smith of Free Union; four living siblings, Bud, Dick, Jean Ann and Jerry; eight grandchildren, Lynsey Leib (Ben Preston) of Richmond, Katlyn (Sam) Catron of Wenatchee, Wash., Taylor (Courtney) Smith of Charlottesville, Caitlin Helveston of Chesapeake, Tyler Leib of Richmond, Aaron (Casey) Helveston of Virginia Beach, Jessica Smith of Charlottesville and Zach Amos of Aldie; and three great-grandchildren. SoSo loved her family immensely. She loved spending time with them and would think nothing of cooking a great big meal for all of them to enjoy.

SoSo was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where she made lifelong friends. SoSo was a giver. Her cooking, baking and crafting skills were used to support her church and their mission work. She was an avid and skilled hand quilter. In her lifetime, she created and assisted with many quilts for lots of folks far and wide. SoSo also was a participating member of UMW and the adult choir at CUMC for many years.

The family would like to express our gratitude to her caregiver and friend, Hope DeLargy, and the many members of the Riverside Hospice team.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at noon at the funeral home officiated by the Rev. Tom Tipton of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church. Private interment will be held in Peninsula Memorial Park. Masks are required to attend the service.
