Virgil C. Smith, 82, Outdoorsman Who Enjoyed Hunting and Fishing

NEWPORT NEWS — Virgil C. Smith, 82, a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, peacefully passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, at home after several months of declining health. Even after a failing heart took him away from this world, his loving heart left a beacon of light to everyone who knew him.

Virgil was born and raised in South Carolina. He grew up working on his family’s farm. While going to church, he met and married his one true love, Ruth. Their dear love for one another is truly the definition of everlasting. Together they had three beautiful children, and, as a family, eventually decided to move to Virginia so he could begin a new career path.

Virgil was a retiree of G&K Services, where he managed all the hospital laundry facilities for over 20 years. He took great pride in his job. Virgil happily retired to enjoy his favorite hobbies that included hunting, fishing, cooking and playing Santa each year at Christmas. His family will forever reminiscence on the special moments together.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gertrude Smith; and son, Virgil S. Smith.

Left to cherish his loving memories are his beautiful wife of 67 years, Ruth Smith; their children and their spouses, including daughter, Fay Pipkin; son, Chris Smith (Beth); grandchildren, Kerry Bland (Stephanie), Casey Spencer (Max), Jason and Jeremy Pipkin, Logan Smith and Katie Anderson; great-grandchildren, Macy Spencer, Talen Bland, Lennon Bland, Kaden Smith, Isabella Thomas and John Anderson; as well as many extended family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service honoring Virgil’s life will follow visitation at the funeral home with interment to following in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in his honor.
