Martha C. Lomax, 93, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 2, 2021.
She was born Dec. 16, 1927, to the late William and Bertha Carter in Croaker. She was the ninth of 10 children, all of whom preceded her in death with the exception of her youngest sister, Hazel Pierce, who still resides in Croaker.
Martha graduated from Bruton Heights in 1945. A few years later, she married James Cumber. This union was blessed with one daughter, Hattie Cumber Cameron.
Several years later after the death of her husband, she was one of the first to purchase a home in Carvers Garden. Soon thereafter, she met the man of her dreams, Percell A. Lomax. On Nov. 6, 1954, they were united in holy matrimony and were blessed with four children, Percell Jr., Bruce, Don and Rita. They were blessed with 57 years of marital bliss until Percell was called to eternal rest.
Martha Lomax was fun-loving and had a genuine love for her family, friends and neighbors. She worked at the Williamsburg Lodge, retiring after 33 years of service. She was a member of Colossian Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the second senior choir. She was also a member of the Philodendron Club, master seamstress, loved bowling, and became famous for doing the “huckabuck” at Morningside Assisted Living, where she was given the name “Ms. Huckabuck.” As she got older, she would often say, “I’ve had a good life.” Martha will be greatly missed but always remembered.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her children, Percell A. Lomax Jr., Bruce Lomax, Don Lomax (Jeanetter) and Rita Johnson (Winston); six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 7, at Colossian Baptist Church with Dr. Peter A. Evans officiating. Livestreaming will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Lomax may be viewed in the church one hour prior to her service.
