William Leroy ‘Roy’ Black, 80, Master Basket Weaver With Colonial Williamsburg for 37 years

CHARLES CITY — William Leroy “Roy” Black, 80, was born Sept. 13, 1940, and entered into eternal rest Friday, June 25, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Randolph Black and Elnora Lee Black-Brown of Charles Cit.; son, William Leroy Black Jr.; sister, Clarice Brown; and four brothers, Marshall Black, Thomas Black, Nathaniel Black, and Lewis Black.

William, fondly known as Roy, joined Parrish Hill Baptist Church at a very young age. Roy retired after 37 years of service from Colonial Williamsburg Foundation as a master basket weaver. He traveled all over the world, including Japan, demonstrating basket weaving. Roy appeared in several magazines, television programs and was extremely passionate about making baskets. He thoroughly enjoyed talking and laughing with everyone. His contagious and loving smile always brought joy to those around him. You could always find Roy in his shed making baskets or working in his yard, waving as the cars passed.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Alberta E. Black; four children, Anthony L. Black (Iris), Regina B. Harris (Tony), William M. Black (Jeanine), and Darren L. Black, all of Charles City; two sisters, Helen Braxton (William) and Ann Williams (Randolph) both of Charles City; one brother, Kenneth Black (Cherri); two sisters-in-law, Emma Black, and Lillian Black; six grandchildren, Sheron C. Black, Toni L. Harris, Allen M. Black, Antonio L. Harris, Anthony L. Black Jr., and Jearice K. Black; one special great-grandchild, Harmony M. Robertson; bonus grandchildren, Dorien and Dalen Tyler; a devoted friend to the family, Peggy Craddock; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 30, at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge. A service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 1, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Dobson Family Cemetery, 11241 Weyanoke Road, Charles City.
