NEWPORT NEWS — Edna L. Woolfolk, 96, passed quietly away during the evening of Friday, April 23, 2021. Born in Bedford County, she was a lifelong resident of Newport News, having traveled there to pursue employment at the Newport News Shipyard during World War II, where she met her husband of 42 years, James P. Woolfolk.

Our mother devoted her entire life to the health and happiness of her family, both immediate and extended. She enjoyed road trips with her family, antiquing, refinishing furniture, fishing and gardening. At any time, a neighbor or passerby might see her wielding an axe or mattock on an unsuspecting stump. Our mother was a self-sufficient, pragmatic, economical realist of deep personal faith. She was frequently known to say that she lived her life “my way.”

Edna L. Woolfolk was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Woolfolk; parents, Wilton B. and Katherine P. Long; brother, Carol P. Long; and sister, Helen L. Spruill.

She is survived by her children, Katherine R. Woolfolk, James P. Woolfolk Jr. (Pat), Cheryl W. Kfuri (Ricardo) and Mary Ellen Compton. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Patrick W. Kfuri, Marla W. Carlisle (William), James A. Woolfolk and Caitlin P. Compton; great-grandchildren, Wyatt C. and Chelsey Rae S. Carlisle; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements for a private graveside service are being coordinated by Weymouth Funeral Home. The family extends its gratitude to the attentive orthopedic Riverside nurses; patient advocate, Kathleen Hogge; and hospice staff.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions made to mark the passing of Edna L. Woolfolk be to a charity of their choice.

Share online condolences with the family at Weymouth Funeral Home.
