WILLIAMSBURG — Donald Wesley Tawney, 84, born March 26, 1936, in Putney, West Virginia, son of a coal miner, peacefully passed away Sunday Jan. 24, 2021 at his home.
Donald graduated from Scott High School in Madison, West Virginia, in 1955, where he was athletic, playing basketball and football. Drafted in the U.S. Army after graduating high school, Donald served his country for three years. After his military service, Donald worked as an electrician at Allied Chemical/Honeywell in Hopewell. He was a member of the Williamsburg Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joyce Schmidt Tawney; sister, Julia Rotfort; brothers, Lawrence “Pedro,” Wayne and Ricky Tawney; daughters, Rebekah Cherren and Stephanie Rigano; grandchildren, Cynthia Kotakis, John Henning Jr. and Jason Henning, who once made their home with their “Pappaw,” and Nicholas Rigano and Michael Cherren Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Louemia Norvall Tawney; brothers, Sidney and Michael Tawney; son, Donald Walter “Boo” Tawney; and daughter, Bridget Allert.
