NEWPORT NEWS — Robert V. “Vann” Walters, 74, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2021. A lifelong resident of Newport News, he was the son of the late Robert and Martha Walters.

Vann graduated from Ferguson High School in 1965. He attended RPI for one year and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to “A” school in Memphis, Tennessee, then to Iceland for the next year. “Life’s four had begun.” After he was discharged from the U.S. Navy, he attended VCU on a G.I. Bill.

Vann met and made many friends and customers in his three occupations that followed — Casey Chevrolet, Dick Dobson Builder and Colonial Kitchens, where he made his way from sales and designer to manager during his 37-year tenure with the company.

Vann was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and usher.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Sun Cha; two daughters, Tina, and her husband, Allen, and Jeanette; and five grandchildren, Suvanna, and her husband, Jacob, Gabrielle, Garrett, Priscilla and Victoria. He is also survived by three sisters, Judy Ogletree, Susan Bosse and Kathy Walters; one niece, Kara Fujita, and her two daughters, Celia and Ella; and one nephew, Andy.

A special thanks to the Hart family for being there through Vann’s bouts with cancer.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29, at Peninsula Memorial Park with Pastor Lynn Hardaway officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.

Share online condolences with the family at W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
