
Miss Lettie Hawkins, 89, received her wings Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, at Riverside Rehabilitation Center, Hampton. She was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Louisburg, North Carolina, to the late Hubert E. Hawkins Sr. and Patti Pearl Hawkins.
Lettie attended Miracle Temple Baptist Church until her health failed. She retired from the U.S. Air Force Regional Hospital, Langley Field, as a dietitian in 1990. She also was a former member of Gospel Light United Holiness Church, Newport News, and Faith Temple, Hampton.
Lettie was preceded in death by four sisters, Arginetta Ruffin, Lillie M. Stallings, Lucille Hall, and twin, Betty Ferguson; four brothers, Hubert E. Hawkins Jr., James E. Hawkins, Fuller Hawkins and Willie Hawkins.
She is survived by four daughters, Edith Murphy-Smalls (John) and Lettie Murphy of Hampton, and Anne Jackson and Barbara G. Murphy of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, Dina E. Marrow, Equanto D. Marrow and Darian L. Murphy (Charlene) of Hampton, Rochelle N. Walker and Melanie Jackson of Houston, Texas, and Erin L. Mitchell of Smyrna, Delaware; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Wilbert Hawkins of Hampton; and sister-in-law, Barbara Hawkins of Newport News. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
Viewing will be held from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Cooke Bros Funeral Chapel. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Miracle Temple Baptist Church, 617 32nd St., Newport News.
